PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

 

NASA’s communications networks have a long legacy, dating back to even before the agency began in 1958. NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center provides the communications connection that enables NASA to explore our universe.


NASA Exploration and Space Communication (ESC works) with the Space Communications and Navigation program office at NASA Headquarters to effectively implement their vision. SCaN is a division of the Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate and provides programmatic oversight of NASA’s networks, advanced communication technologies, and other space communications requirements. These capabilities support all NASA missions, providing critical connectivity from spacecraft to ground. At Goddard, ESC provides the leaders, engineers and expertise needed to make SCaN’s missions and services a reality.

 

Goddard manages the Space Network and the Near Earth Network, which together provide 98 percent of NASA’s communications coverage for spacecraft and missions. The Space Network is NASA’s first geosynchronous, space-based communications network, consisting of Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS) that communicate with a minimal number of ground stations. A number of worldwide tracking stations, both government and commercial, comprise the Near Earth Network

 

The ESC Division at NASA GSFC supports, operates, and evolves the NASA Space Network (SN) and Near Earth Network (NEN). Our work support the modernization strategy for ESC, which is looking to how Cell phones have enabled people to venture further and more confidently across the globe than ever before. That shows the impact of seamless communications, and ESC seeks to provide the same experience for space missions. That’s why they are developing a next-generation architecture that will make communications more flexible, efficient and cost-effective.

 

ESC is unifying their two existing networks to create what they call the Space Mobile Network. The new systems will provide higher data rates, greater flexibility and continued reliability for near-Earth missions, as well as move toward becoming interoperable with other commercial and government systems. As missions look further into the universe and collect more data.

 

ROLE DESCRIPTION:

 

Noblis is looking for a qualified Senior Satellite Systems Ground Networks Architecture Engineer and Integrator to provide expertise in systems development, network integration and evolution, testing and integration of space and ground systems, and critical analysis to the NASA Space Network (SN) and Near Earth Network (NEN). The role involves technical coordination within the client and the stakeholder organizations and contractors.

 

The Systems Architect will work within a lab at Noblis, Noblis Software Defined Network test lab, the Exploration & Space Communication Lab, and the NASA chief architect and Systems Engineering offices. 

 

The Systems Architect will serve as a senior systems engineer and test integrator for NASA’s SN and NEN networks. The position will require the candidate to develop a trusted adviser role with NASA’s government leadership; help the Government to develop an integrated and validated approach/architecture for potential future network evolution; reduce its risks, identify potential problems, develop innovative solutions, and strengthen its oversight of development plan.

This work will include systems engineering, network integration, lab test and set up, and systems analysis as well as outreach to the NASA government and contractor communities. This work will help inform key NASA policy and programmatic decisions on the planning and deployment of NASA capabilities. Technical and potential financial alternatives analyses will be a critical part of the work given the broad set of system dependencies and complexity of various approaches. Familiarity with satellite communication systems and space and ground networks is required. Recent NOAA or NASA experiences a plus.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS degree in an engineering field, with a Master's degree preferred
  • Possess a strong technical knowledge and a minimum of 10 years working experience in satellite communication systems.
  • Broad working knowledge of network plans, network integration processes and requirements for satellite communication and ground systems and operations. An understanding of software defined networking and current knowledge of industry advancements and network trends of telecom systems is also preferred.
  • The role requires working closely with clients and other contractors, as well as developing written reports – the candidate must therefore possess good written and oral communication skills and have strong skills in customer interaction. 
  • The role will entail working in a dynamic team-oriented project, therefore, and the selected candidate will demonstrate initiative, and function productively in a design and development environment where satellite communications and ground segment issues can result in new assignments and the re-prioritization of existing assignments. The candidate must be results-oriented with strong problem solving abilities.  
  • Practiced collaborative skills working with technical teams composed of NASA and other government employees and other contractors
  • Excellent communication, organizational, technical, writing, spreadsheet and presentation development, and presentation skills 
  • Ability to quickly respond to and perform short term technical and program management assignments; 
  • Ability to resolve technical and programmatic disagreements.

    All work will be performed at either Noblis, in Reston , VA or at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, in Greenbelt, Maryland.
