Responsibilities

The Department of Defense seeks to develop a path for DoD Sustainability and Resilience that is aggressive, ambitious, innovative, and comprehensive; includes a DoD strategic vision for catalyzing clean energy for industries and jobs; defines how DoD will achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050; and implements data driven management and decision logic for energy, waste, recycling and water resources; and transitions DoD procurement, platforms, systems, operations, activities and installations to a sustainable and resilient future that reinforces the warfighter and DoD missions. This work will include initiatives to facilitate sustainable and clean practices. 

 

Responsibilities for the Waste Recycling and Circular Economy Expert will include:

 

  • Actions for water, waste, recycling include evaluation of current state, identification of opportunities for updates and planning for and implementing of changes. Improvements will be conducted to increase energy efficiency, reduce use, reduce waste, and ensure resilience for the supply of these resources.   
  • Assist in identifying a high priority set of waste management and recycling initiatives and provide direct program/project assistance to these initiatives, leveraging best practice in the private sector and latest, most innovative technologies.     
  • Work with DoD Offices, Services, test facilities and installations to strategize, plan, and execute the best possible path to demonstrate waste recycling related projects on DoD installations with least resistance, risk, and delays. 
  • Provide training and support to key government staff as well as to make recommendations regarding organizational redesign and/or change to DoD policies and processes.  
  • Stay abreast and informed of DoD’s and its Military Services’ waste recycling requirements, policies, processes, points of contacts and related programs. Participate in relevant workshops, meetings, and conferences. 
  • Incorporates traditional reduce, reuse, recycle activities plus composting into a larger ecosystem with a new emphasis on deliberate, circular design of goods and services. This position will assist the DoD in circular economy planning that meets Executive Order or Statutory requirements. 
  • Emphasis on keeping materials in play as long as possible to decrease need for virgin materials.  
  • Supports closed-loop material flows for technologies vital to mitigating climate change and offsets carbon- and energy-intense raw material production industries.  
  • Increases supply chain resiliency by preferring local/domestic sources of materials and encouraging distributed, co-located industries with complementary inputs and outputs to form industrial material ecosystems.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelors’ degree in an engineering, energy, environment, or other relevant field 
  • 5+ years’ experience 
  • Experience in evaluating and optimizing waste management and recycling practices to include relevant applications in circular economy  
  • Ability to obtain Secret Clearance 
  • U.S. citizen 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • 7+ years’ experience 
  • Secret Clearance or higher

Client Engagement

• Begin developing relationships one level up and two levels down. Identify and support opportunities to expand project scope beyond current deliverable and actively share information about clients’ emerging support needs and trends with team members and management.
