The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Voice Switch and Recording (VS&R) Program Office includes seven different programs related to the voice communication activities of Air Traffic Control within the National Airspace System (NAS). These programs range from the sustainment of Legacy equipment & systems currently in operation across the United States to the design of new systems and procurement of future VS&R equipment.


The VS&R Security Engineer will support the FAA in modernizing and acquiring new air traffic control voice communications systems for the NAS.  The Security Engineer will be focused on supporting the VS&R Program Office in achieving technical milestones for Air Traffic Control VoICE Communications Systems (VCSs), including the Air-to-Ground Protocol Converter (APC), the Ground-to-Ground Protocol Converter (GPC) and Voice Switches.  The Security Engineer will provide technical expertise on system implementations used to address security controls. He/She will be able to analyze and track security risks or issues on 3rd party system security design, using common standards and certifications, and collaborate with stakeholders from other functional areas to achieve security authorization (which includes hardening analysis and artifact generation).




Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelors degree and 12+ years of professional experience.
  • Self-starter (identifies needed tasks and completes them)
  • Experience as a System Owner, in Program Office, responsible for addressing cyber security risks and controls.
    · DevOps experience (e.g., automation tools such as Ansible, Docker, Jenkins, etc.)
    · Linux experience (comfortable on the terminal, writing bash scripts, configuring packages, etc.)
    · Strong logic/reasoning skills (e.g., can understand/analyze requirements, and identify logical contradictions/gaps)
    · Experience with FAA stakeholder processes (e.g., T&E process, Security Authorization process)
    · Willingness to learn stakeholder processes and practice them
    · Good communication skills
    · Security experience (e.g., hardening, SAST/DAST, penetration testing, etc.)
    · Experience documenting security requirements, plans, DIDs/CDRLS, remediation, POAMs


*This position location will be primarily remote. There is a higher preference for those willing to occasionally go to either our D.c. site or New Jersey site. 


Desired skills and knowledge:

  • Experience conducting and participating in technical interchange meetings
    · Networking (Analog/TDM/VoIP) experience (SIP/SDP/RTP), specifically ED-137 VoIP (for ATC communication)

• Begin developing relationships one level up and two levels down. Identify and support opportunities to expand project scope beyond current deliverable and actively share information about clients’ emerging support needs and trends with team members and management.
